Chiel van Zelst paints his hometown in a large and colorful way. His style of painting has been influenced by the old masters and by contemporary street art and graffiti culture, together they blend into a unique new style of painting. Chiel of Zelst (Amsterdam, 1964) is a Dutch artist painter and artistique entrepreneur. In 2006 he was elected Night Mayor of Amsterdam. During his studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 1994 he was one of the initiators of the early house parties in Vrieshuis America. He later studied in New York i.a. the School of Visual Arts and ran an artist run space called Brooklyn Not Coffee. Before his studies van Zelst was adicted to drugs for a while and later in 1999 he published a picaresque novella about this period called 100.000 Bike Valves. After returing from the US in 2002 he initiated the Chiellerie, a do it youself gallery where young artists could experiment and showcase their works. Since 2008 van Zelst focused on his own carear as a painter. He now works as a professional painter and runs his own gallery wher he is specialized in the Amsterdam cityscape.
